Haleakalā reaches 3.055 metres, and the road to the summit climbs there from sea level in about two hours – one of the fastest ascents of that size anywhere. The point most visitors get wrong is the temperature: while the coast sits at over 20 degrees, the summit before dawn is close to freezing. The second is the reservation. Between 3 and 7 in the morning the four highest car parks require a permit booked through Recreation.gov.
