Other Experiences on Maui

This is the smallest page on the site and deliberately so: it holds what does not belong under snorkelling, the Hāna road or the volcano. The Maui Ocean Center in Māʻalaea is the main entry here, and it is the one indoor option on the island that works on a wet afternoon. Alongside it are the open-air coastal drives along West Maui and the short stop at the Nākālele blowhole.

Good to know: Almost everything here is a ticket rather than a guided tour, which means no fixed departure and no minimum group – useful on an arrival or departure day when a six-hour boat trip does not fit. The aquarium is the exception worth planning: it is busiest in the middle of the day, when everyone else has also run out of beach weather.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a rental car on Maui?

For most of what people come here for, yes. The sights are spread across the whole island and public transport does not reach Haleakalā, the Hāna Highway or most trailheads. The exception is the boat trips: those leave from harbours where the operator usually offers pick-up, so a snorkelling or whale day works without a car.

When are the whales here?

Humpbacks are in the channel from roughly November to April, with January to March the peak and February the densest month. Outside that window there is nothing to see – and the trips stay bookable all year, so check your dates against the season rather than against the listing.

Do I need a reservation for the Haleakalā sunrise?

Only if you drive yourself. Between 3 and 7 a.m. every private vehicle in the four highest car parks needs a permit from Recreation.gov, released 60 days ahead at 7 a.m. HST and gone fast, at $1 per vehicle on top of the park entrance fee. On a guided tour the operator holds a commercial permit and you need nothing. After 7 a.m. no reservation is required at all.

Can I see lava, Pearl Harbor or the Nāpali Coast from Maui?

Not on Maui. Flowing lava is on Hawaiʻi Island, Pearl Harbor is on Oʻahu and the Nāpali Coast is on Kauaʻi – each an inter-island flight away, not a drive. A few day trips do fly you over, but they are a full day plus a flight, not an excursion. Haleakalā is a volcano but has not erupted in centuries.

Should I drive the Road to Hāna myself or book a tour?

The road is 84 kilometres with 620 curves and 59 bridges, 46 of them single-lane. Non-stop it takes about two and a half hours each way; with stops it is a ten to twelve hour day. If you want to look at the waterfalls rather than the next blind corner, take the tour. If you would rather set your own pace, there are GPS audio guides – but check whether your rental agreement covers the unpaved stretch past Kīpahulu, because several companies exclude it.

Will I get seasick on the Molokini trip?

The inside of the crater is sheltered, but the crossing is open ocean and the trade winds build through the day. Morning departures are noticeably calmer, which is the main reason they cost more. Sitting mid-ship, staying on deck and keeping your eyes on the horizon all help; anything beyond that belongs in a conversation with a pharmacy or your doctor before you travel.

Is Lahaina open to visitors again?

Partly. After the August 2023 fire, Front Street reopened to traffic between Pāpalaua and Shaw Street on 1 August 2026, with Kimoʻs, the ʻUlu o Lele Marketplace and more than a dozen businesses back. Market Street, Papelekane Street, Mokuhinia Place and Banyan Court Park remain closed, and much of the historic core has not reopened. Boat trips, lūʻau and surf lessons run from here again. Expect an active rebuilding site, not a restored old town.
