Molokini is a half-sunken volcanic cone about three miles off the Mākena coast, and it has been a Marine Life Conservation District since 1977 – which is why the fish are still there. The inside of the crescent is sheltered from the trade winds, so the water is calmer and clearer than anywhere you can reach from the shore. Boats leave from Māʻalaea, Kīhei and Lahaina; the crossing is a large part of the trip length, so compare departure harbour, not just price.
