Haleakalā on Foot: Crater Hike or Llama Trek?
Updated October 12, 2026 · 5 min read
If you want to walk inside Haleakalā, book the Guided Hike of Haleakala Crater with Lunch: seven hours, €183.09 per person, two 2-mile walks at different elevations. Choose the Sunset Llama Trek only if the animals are the reason: it is 75 minutes on a ranch slope at 3,500 feet, not a crater walk.
The two walks side by side
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | Fits best |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guided Hike of Haleakala Crater with Lunch | 7 hours | €183.09 per person | 5 from 9 reviews | Walkers who want the summit area and a lava trail |
| Sunset Llama Trek on Haleakala | 1 hour 15 minutes | €173.98 per person | 5 from 7 reviews | Couples and small groups after a gentle sunset walk |
Treat both ratings with caution. Nine and seven reviews are a good sign, not a track record.
What the crater hike actually is
The listing describes two separate walks with a certified guide. The first is 2 miles to the 10,000-foot summit area, where cinder cones dominate a desert-like landscape. The second is another 2 miles at 8,000 feet on a lava trail lined with native plants. A picnic lunch and snacks are part of the day, along with bottled water, backpacks, ponchos and hotel pickup and drop-off.

Two warnings from the booking page. Children under 8 and people with mobility impairments are listed as not suited. And the tour runs in most weather but can be altered for safety, so the summit stretch is not guaranteed. Bring warm clothing and sports shoes. Besides hotel pickup, the listing gives a meeting point at the junction of highways 311 and 380, just west of Kahului.

What the llama trek actually is
Here you drive yourself. You park beside Kula Country Farms without entering, a van meets you, and you follow it in your own car to the trailhead. Each guest is paired with a llama, there is a short handling briefing, and the route follows a gravel road that becomes a grass path. The listing calls it relatively flat, with views across to the West Maui Mountains and neighbouring islands as the sun sets. Groups are limited to four.

Because you must follow the van, the trek works only with a car; compare rental cars on Maui if you arrived without one. The restrictions are stricter than the hike: children under 13, wheelchair users and people with back problems, heart problems or a low fitness level are listed as not suitable, and riding the llamas is not allowed.
Which one is for whom
Price is almost irrelevant here: the llama trek costs €9.11 less, but you get 75 minutes instead of a seven-hour day with lunch. So decide by what you want to see.
- Want volcanic landscape and a proper walk: the crater hike. It is also the only one of the two inside the national park.
- Want an easy, unusual hour near sunset: the llama trek, with the caveat that it is a farm slope in Upcountry, not the crater.
- Travelling with young children: neither. The age floors are 8 and 13, so look at our family guide to Maui instead.
Our recommendation
For most readers the answer is the first option: book the crater hike with lunch. Pick the llama trek as a deliberate second activity, not as a substitute. For other ways to see the mountain, browse the Haleakalā tours.
