What a three-hour trip leaves you
The afternoon boat gives you time for one snorkel site. Its itinerary lists about 1.5 hours in the water at Coral Gardens, with the rest going to check-in, the crossing from Maʻalaea Bay and the meal. The upside is a free morning: you can sleep in or squeeze in a beach hour before checking in at Boss Frog’s. The downside is that Molokini is optional.

What five hours buys
Most of the five-hour trips serve breakfast on the outbound crossing, stop at the crater, then move to a second site and lunch. Check-in, boarding and the crossing consume the first part, and a day with something else booked in the afternoon is workable only if the return time leaves a buffer. Two of the trips state 5 hours; the Molokini Snorkeling Adventure aboard the Calypso states 5.5.
Check morning times for the Molokini and Turtle Town trip
The sailing trip is the exception in character: five hours under sail with Molokini as the single snorkel destination, so the time is distributed differently, with more of it on deck.
When the length changes
Both the listings and reviews mention that conditions can alter a day. A review of the eco-friendly tour describes spending about two hours inside Molokini because swell made Turtle Town unreachable. So the total time on the boat is more reliable than the split between stops.
Who should take which
- Short on time, or half-day sightseeing booked as well: the 3-hour afternoon trip.
- Want both Molokini and the turtles: a five-hour morning trip.
- Travelling with a child who tires quickly: the three hours is easier to manage; our guide to Maui with kids covers the rest.
Our recommendation
Block a whole morning and book the Molokini and Turtle Town trip with a meal. Choose the 3-hour trip only when time is the binding constraint, not as a cheaper version of the same day. All trips are listed under Molokini snorkelling tours.
